Save mobile data while using your hotspot: 10 settings that work

Your laptop thinks it's on home Wi-Fi. Tell it the truth and save gigabytes.

Connected laptops and tablets treat a hotspot like home broadband: they download updates, sync photos and autoplay video in HD. A few settings change that.

Tell devices it's a hotspot

Windows: mark the network as a metered connection. macOS and iPhone/iPad: turn on Low Data Mode for that Wi-Fi network. Android: Wi-Fi network settings → metered. Updates and backups then wait for real Wi-Fi.

Lower video quality

Streaming video is usually the biggest data user. Choose standard definition in video apps and turn off autoplay — you'll barely notice on a small screen.

Pause cloud sync

Photo backup, cloud drives and large game downloads can quietly use gigabytes. Pause them while you're on the hotspot.

Watch your usage

Check the data counter on the host phone and set a warning in its data settings. Hotspot Hub's Tools tab also shows your connection and session usage.

Quick tips

  • Mark the hotspot as metered on every laptop.
  • Set video apps to standard quality on mobile data.
  • Pause photo backup and big downloads.
  • Turn the hotspot off when nobody needs it.

Questions

Why did my laptop use so much data?

Usually system updates, cloud sync or HD video. Marking the connection as metered stops most of it.

Does a QR code use data?

No. The Wi-Fi QR code is made on your device and works offline.

Does my plan limit tethering separately?

Some plans have a separate tethering allowance even when phone data is "unlimited". Check your carrier's terms.
