Hotspot for kids' tablets: car rides, restaurants and waiting rooms
Calm kids in the back seat — without handing over your phone.
Long drives, waiting rooms and restaurants are easier with a tablet. Instead of buying a cellular tablet or a second data plan, you can share your phone's connection — and stay in control.
Set it up once
Create a hotspot with a strong password and save it on the tablet once. A Wi-Fi QR code makes this a five-second job, and the tablet rejoins automatically next time.
Stay in control
Turn the hotspot on only when you want the tablet online, and off again afterwards. Combine it with the parental controls your tablet already has, such as Google Family Link or Apple Screen Time.
Save data
Download shows and games on home Wi-Fi before you leave, and use the tablet's data-saver or low-data mode so updates and backups wait until you're home.
Keep strangers out
Never use an open (password-free) hotspot for children's devices. If you shared the password with other families, change it afterwards.
Quick tips
- Download episodes at home; stream only when needed.
- Limit the hotspot to one or two devices in your phone's settings.
- Turn off automatic app updates on the tablet while travelling.
Questions
Is a hotspot safe for my child's tablet?
With WPA2/WPA3 and a strong password, a hotspot is far safer than public Wi-Fi in a restaurant or mall.
How much data does a cartoon use?
Video uses the most data — very roughly up to about 1 GB per hour at standard quality and more in HD. Downloading in advance avoids it entirely.
Can I limit what the child does online?
Use the device's parental controls for content and time; the hotspot decides only when the tablet is online.
